Sick Stretches

Some simple stretches for when you are sick and recovering

Hi Everybody,

One of the things I am working on in my own world is integrating the part of me that is a trained dancer with the part of me that is chronically ill. I miss teaching, and have dipped my toes back in, but just don’t have the stamina yet to teach - or take - a full class. Instead I have been developing these bite-sized morsels of movement. I filmed this one while recovering from COVID. It was that chapter of time well after my worst symptoms had eased - for me this was week two. I felt depleted and fatigued but also ready to step back into my body. I wanted to remember my body as it experienced movement and enjoyment. This is not something that can be forced or hurried. I don’t recommend doing any structured movement when sick until your body actually craves it.

The idea of these little morsels is to just remind your body that it can feel good sometimes and it will feel good again. I think to myself as I do these moves, “Remember this? Remember how we can do this sometimes?” And that’s it! I don’t want to achieve anything more than a simple reintroduction, a remembering, a little waking up of sensations. Here are some moves to bring ease and enjoyment when you are recovering from illness.
